PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

"My why!"

One of my favorite poems is “Our Deepest Fear” by Marianne Williamson.  I carry it around with me in my music binder at all times and read it often as a reminder to keep pushing. One line that really resonates to me reads, “It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.”  I am blessed with amazingly talented students every year who come to me scared to sing in front of others.  They are afraid of their own “light.”  My Philosophy of teaching is to not only  help each student discover and accept their own light, but to help them shine it for all to see.

Teaching has always been a part of who I am.  I feel the way a Preacher is called by God to Preach; a Teacher is called by God to Teach.  Growing up, I started to notice how much joy it brought me to teach people how to do things.  I loved explaining everything, and I especially got a thrill out of seeing that light bulb come on in their heads.  The biggest inspiration to my path to teaching was, in fact, my teachers.  I looked up to a lot of my teachers, especially my Choir and English Teachers.  Both subjects had a way of developing my creativity, imagination, and self-esteem.  My biggest contributions and accomplishments have always and will always be building up my students.  No matter their background or situations, they will always be pushed, encouraged, and supported in my classroom.
